New River Gorge
Carved by eons of rushing water, the New River Gorge is exceptionally steep and stunningly beautiful. Designated a National River, the New River and the 70,000 acres surrounding the Gorge are maintained by the National Park Service. There's 65 miles of trails around the Gorge including 1,600 climbing routes and 1000's of species of plants and animals. The 60 mile long span of deciduous forest is the largest in the Nation.
The New River Gorge is popular with recreation enthusiasts and thrill seekers who enjoy whitewater rafting, rock climbing, mountain biking, hiking, bird watching, camping, and fishing. The Gorge is also popular with history buffs interested in the protected mining, civil war, and railroad sites in the park.
The New River Gorge is also where you'll find the largest single span arch bridge in our hemisphere, the New River Gorge Bridge. The New River Gorge Bridge is a marvel whether you're seeing it from a lookout, trail, or from far below on the river. Each year 10s of thousands gather in October for Bridge Day, the only day your can legally walk on the bridge and BASE jump from the 876' span.
