Fall in the New River Gorge National Park

The season of fall is a beautiful time when you are visiting the area surrounding our newest National Park: The New River Gorge. Changing leaves, fall festivals, Gauley Season rafting, and cozy cabins are all staples of fall here. However, not everyone knows about all things there are to do when coming to West Virginia in the fall. Many will come to our cabins with no clue of all this gorgeous location has to offer.

When do the Leaves Start to Change?

One of the most important questions to ask when planning a vacation during the fall season is “When do the leaves actually start changing colors?”. In the New River Gorge (Fayette County), we start to see a change in foliage around late-October. Find WV Tourism’s predicted fall foliage map below and also visit their site to get updates on color changes as they occur.

Bridge Day

Indisputably the New River Gorge’s biggest fall celebration, Bridge Day creates an environment like no other. Held on the third Saturday in October, Bridge Day celebrates the close of Gauley Season, which is the most intense time of year for whitewater rafting, and gives adventure junkies the opportunity of a lifetime: jumping off one of the longest single-arch bridges in the world. Plus, for the more tame of us, it hosts food & craft vendors from all over. So, you can enjoy a funnel cake while watching some of the most experienced parachuters around catapult themselves into the Gorge. More information on Bridge Day events can be found here.

Gauley Season

Before the aftermentioned Bridge Day, there is Gauley Season. This is the time when the Gauley River is at its most thrilling! Rafting the Gauley during its peak season creates a whitewater experience like no other. We always like to recommend our area’s largest outfitter, Adventures on the Gorge, for these trips.

Fall in a Cozy West Virginia Cabin

Fall is truly a time like no other here in West Virginia and, particularly, in its National Park. Just 10 minutes away from that park is where Country Road Cabins comes in. We offer luxury cabinsyurts, treehouses, and glamping tents all situated in the woods of Hico. There is also no time when our properties look more gorgeous than when placed in a backdrop of stunning orange, red, & yellow leaves. Plus, cozying up in a log cabin and warming up in a hot tub here at CRC certainly helps to take off the chill of fall.
